The driving your test never covered

Passing your test proves you can drive safely. It doesn't mean you've driven at night in the rain, joined a motorway at speed, or dealt with a fast unlit country road. For most new drivers, the first time they do any of that, they're on their own.

Pass Plus fills that gap, with an instructor in the car for the first go rather than after something's gone wrong.

The six modules

• Town driving — heavy traffic, cyclists, pedestrians, complex junctions.
• All-weather driving — rain, spray, low sun, ice, and stopping distances that change with them.
• Rural roads — blind bends, hidden entrances, mud, horses and unmarked lanes.
• Night driving — headlight use, judging distance and speed in the dark, dealing with dazzle.
• Dual carriageways — joining, lane discipline and overtaking at speed.
• Motorways — the big one. Slip roads, lane discipline, smart motorways and what to do if something goes wrong.

There's no test at the end. You're assessed as you go, and you get a certificate on completion.

Worth knowing about insurance

Some insurers offer a discount to drivers who've completed Pass Plus. Some don't, and the saving varies a lot. It's worth a quick call to your insurer before you book so you know exactly what it's worth in your case — rather than taking anyone's word for it.

Either way, the point of the course is the driving itself. The discount, where it exists, is a bonus.
