Learn in a manual and keep every option open
Passing your test in a manual means your licence covers both manual and automatic cars. It's the reason most learners still choose it — you're never left ruling out a car, a job or a hire vehicle later on because of the gearbox.
The trade-off is that there's more happening in the first few lessons. Clutch, gears, biting point and hill starts all arrive at once, and that's exactly the point where a lot of people decide they're "no good at driving". They usually aren't — they've just been rushed.
How the lessons are structured
Mark builds manual tuition up in layers, and each one is properly settled before the next is added. Nothing is skipped to make the lesson look faster than it is.
- Cockpit drill and controls — seat, mirrors, pedals and what everything does, usually somewhere quiet.
- Moving off and stopping — finding the biting point until it stops being a guess.
- Gear changes in traffic — changing up and down without looking down.
- Hill starts — the one everybody dreads, broken into steps that actually work.
- Junctions, roundabouts and lane discipline — reading the road early instead of reacting late.
- Manoeuvres — bay parking, parallel parking, pulling up on the right.
- Independent driving and mock tests — so test day is familiar rather than a shock.
A calm car makes a real difference
Lessons are paced around you. Stall at a busy junction and nothing happens — you restart, you carry on, and you learn something. Over 20 years of teaching, that patience turns out to matter more than any clever technique.

Hoping for a female instructor? Worth knowing up front that manual lessons are taught by Mark. Louise Curnow teaches automatics only, so if you'd prefer a female instructor, learning in an automatic is the way to do it.
Already had lessons elsewhere?
That's fine, and common. Mark will spend the first lesson working out what's already solid and what needs polishing up, rather than starting you again from scratch and charging you for it.

Common questions
How many manual lessons will I need?
It varies more than people expect. The DVSA's own guidance is around 45 hours of professional tuition plus private practice, but that's an average, not a target — some learners take fewer, some take more, and neither is a problem.
After your first couple of lessons Mark will give you an honest steer on where you're up to, and he'll keep telling you as you go rather than leaving you guessing.
Should I learn in a manual or an automatic?
A manual licence lets you drive both, so it keeps every option open — that's the main reason people pick it. The trade-off is that clutch control adds something extra to think about early on.
If gears are the bit that worries you, or an automatic is simply what you want to drive, automatic lessons are worth a look. Not sure? Say so when you book and Mark will talk it through.
I've never sat in a driver's seat before. Is that fine?
Completely. Plenty of first lessons start in a quiet side street with the engine off, just getting familiar with the controls. Nobody is thrown into traffic on day one.
