Some people simply learn better with a woman in the passenger seat, and nobody should have to explain why. Louise Curnow teaches our automatic lessons — she's a fully qualified DVSA-approved instructor, and she works part time.
You don't have to give a reason
People ask for a female instructor for all sorts of reasons. Some have had a bad experience before. Some find it easier to admit they're struggling. For some it's cultural, or it's about faith, or it's simply what their family is comfortable with. And plenty of people just prefer it and leave it at that.
You will never be asked to justify it here. Say so when you get in touch and that's the end of the conversation — the only thing that matters is that you're relaxed enough in the car to actually take things in.
The honest part, up front
Louise teaches automatic lessons only and works part time, so her diary is limited — ask as early as you can and she will fit you in if she has the space.
We'd rather tell you that now than take a booking and let you down later. If you need manual lessons, Mark teaches those — and if you're not sure which licence you actually need, it's worth two minutes on the phone before you decide anything.
What automatic actually means for you
No clutch and no gear changes. That sounds minor until you're sitting at a busy roundabout, where it's the difference between thinking about the traffic and thinking about your left foot.
An automatic licence is a full driving licence. The only thing it doesn't cover is driving a manual car — and every electric car on the road is an automatic, so that restriction matters less each year.
How Louise teaches
Calmly, and at your pace. She's a fully qualified DVSA-approved driving instructor — an ADI, not a trainee — and the standard she teaches to is exactly the same one Mark teaches to. Observation, positioning, junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, manoeuvres and independent driving. The test doesn't go easier on you, and neither does she.
What changes is the pace and the atmosphere, not the syllabus.
Louise is a previous teaching assistant and has lots of experience in dealing with special educational needs, particularly neurodiverse conditions such as autism and ADHD.

Common questions
Can I have manual lessons with a female instructor?
Not at the moment, and it's better to say so plainly than waste your time. Louise teaches automatic lessons only. Mark teaches both manual and automatic, so if a manual licence is what you're after, he's who you'd be learning with.
If the automatic side is negotiable for you, an automatic licence is a full licence — it just doesn't cover manual cars. Plenty of people never drive one.
Is Louise fully qualified?
Yes. She's a fully qualified DVSA-approved driving instructor — an ADI, which is the green badge, not a trainee's pink one. It's worth asking any driving school this question, because not everyone teaching is fully qualified.
Does it cost more to learn with a female instructor?
No. The rates are exactly the same whoever you learn with, and the same for manual and automatic. You can see them all on the prices page.
How much notice does she need?
As much as you can give her. Louise works part time with no fixed days, so her diary is genuinely limited — this isn't a sales line. Ask early, and you'll get an honest answer about what she actually has free rather than a maybe.
Weekends are possible by individual arrangement.
What car would I be learning in?
A Nissan Note Tekna — petrol, automatic, with dual controls, air conditioning, and a birds-eye camera that shows a 360° view of the car from above while you're manoeuvring. It's fully insured for learner drivers.
The camera is the thing people mention most. It doesn't do the parking for you, and you'll still learn to do it properly on your mirrors — but it takes a lot of the panic out of working out where the back of the car ends.
