In an automatic there's no clutch and no gear changes. That sounds like a small thing until you're at a busy roundabout, and suddenly it's the difference between thinking about traffic and thinking about your left foot.

For a lot of learners — particularly nervous ones, returning drivers, and anyone who's had a rough time with a previous instructor — automatic tuition is what makes driving click.

Who tends to choose automatic?

• Nervous or anxious learners — one less thing to go wrong is one less thing to dread.
• Drivers who lack confidence in a manual — switching often fixes it.
• Anyone driving an electric car — every EV is an automatic.
• Learners who find manual overwhelming — including neurodiverse learners with conditions such as autism and ADHD.

You still learn to drive properly

Automatic doesn't mean an easier standard. You'll cover observation, road positioning, junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, manoeuvres and independent driving to exactly the same level — the test doesn't go softer on you, and neither does Mark.

What changes is where your attention goes. Instead of splitting it between the gearbox and the road, all of it goes on the road.

Prefer to learn with a female instructor?

You can. Louise Curnow teaches automatic lessons only and works part time, so her diary is limited — ask as early as you can and she will fit you in if she has the space.

Nobody needs to explain why they'd rather have a female instructor — the point is that you feel relaxed enough in the car to actually take things in. Just say when you get in touch and we'll tell you honestly what she has free.
